Hello all
It has been over a year since my last blog and things have changed! I reflected on my work and lifestyle balance whilst co-teaching massage at Inner Space. As a result, I decided to press “pause” with this aspect and apply sole focus back, to my massage practice. This has allowed me to consolidate and use my new skills to increase the depth of knowledge to my massage treatments and the coaching advice which is inclusive to my service for all clients.
I believe in showing complete transparency to my way of working and would like to share these ways with you. As you know, I treat holistically and reflect on each client’s journey.
Initially, I complete a consultation. Essentially by collecting information, to establish the most appropriate way to treat on the day. This can be followed by assessment and testing. Ideally, I will ask for the client to consider their short term and long term aims for treatment and wellbeing. This gives the client a focus and perhaps a timescale to work towards. This can change and evolve along the way. Based on the information collected from the consultation the massage will be completed. Aftercare will be provided with advice to achieve the best results from the treatment. Included in the session are lifestyle elements which can be monitored and this is where the coaching skills play an important part. Each piece can be considered part of a jigsaw. One or more of these elements could be key to making a small or large change to day to day living experiences. This has also proven beneficial to accelerate client’s progress. So, is it time to change? Each of the following aspects are key to reflect upon under the umbrella of best practice, to consider if they can be the difference to make the difference:
- Stress
- Posture
- Diet
- Water intake
- Lifestyle
- Treatment
- Activities
- Other (any new element not covered, for example: warming up and down)
Each treatment is documented and there are four key elements I would consider for each client respectively and these are graded from 1 (acute) to 5 (optimal health):
- Function (movement)
- Muscle tone
- Symptoms
- Emotion level
This offers a timeline to show their progress.
Working together in the session to solve the client’s jigsaw and move forward towards a goal is inspiring. I have found this groundwork empowers the client to take control of their lifestyle outside of the treatment room, in the now and for the future!
